What is a Backflow Prevention Device?
Backflow prevention devices are plumbing apparatus stopping reverse water flow from a potentially polluted source into the potable (drinking) water supply. Backflow prevention devices must be installed where there is a potential hazard. Certain types of backflow prevention devices are classified as “testable” so they must be tested annually by a licensed backflow-endorsed plumber.
How Does Backflow Occur?
South East Queensland’s water supply system delivers the water to properties under pressure in order to maintain water flow at your taps and other plumbing fixtures. In cases where this pressure falls, risks are present where contaminated water can flow back into the mains water supply.
Which Locations May Have Backflow Prevention Devices Installed?
Backflow devices are extremely common and many premises will already have a backflow prevention device. Backflow prevention devices may be found at the following locations:
- Fire hose reels or hydrants
- Swimming pools
- Garden ponds
- Commercial dishwashers
- Hotels and motels
- Unit blocks
- Schools, daycare centres and kindergartens
- Restaurants and cafes
- Mechanics workshops
- Caravan parks
- Medical or dental surgeries
- Veterinary surgeries
- Sports Clubhouses
What Types of Backflow Devices are Testable?
There are many different types of backflow prevention devices. However, not all of them are required to be tested. Testable devices that must be registered and tested annually include:
- reduced pressure zone
- double check, and
- some single check valves.
Non-testable devices; including dual check valves, do not need to be registered or tested annually.
How often do I have to have my devices tested?
Council requires all owners of backflow prevention devices to have them tested at least once a year by a licensed and endorsed plumber. Your local council will issue a notice to advise you when your backflow prevention device is due to be tested. They will also advise you of the date that the testing must be completed by. Local council penalties apply for failure to test backflow devices as required by Queensland government legislation.
Are all Plumbers accredited to Test Backflow Prevention Devices?
Not all Plumbers hold a Backflow Prevention Accreditation on their plumbing licence so you cannot assume that just any plumber can legally perform any backflow-related service.
